After Park Vista hammered Oviedo in the regular season 20-2, many people thought the semi-final game would just be a formality to the Cobras run into the finals.

Not so fast lax fans, the Lions gave the Cobras all they could handle on Friday, leading the majority of the game, including a 9-8 lead at halftime. PV jumped out to a 3-0 lead and Jamie Reeg and Brittini Peck lead the scoring charge. Oviedo was able to rally with 5 Free Position goals in the half, and took the lead into the locker room. Stephanie Riviera led the Lions with 4 goals.

It wasn’t enough to hold off the Cobras though, PV stepped it up in the 2nd half, only allowing 1 goal while filling up the net 7 times themselves. Ellyn Spangenberg was the only player on Oviedo to find the net. Spangenberg played the entire game, and in the 2nd half the Cobras superior depth was definitely a factor. PV also did a great job controlling the draw late in the game to prevent an Oviedo comeback. Alyssa Bernfield led the Cobras with 4 goals.

Regardless of the loss, Oviedo ends with a season to remember in their program. They defied many expectations on their way to the 1st FHSAA Lacrosse championship weekend. Oviedo came out of what is arguably the deepest region in the state, Nease, Winter Springs, and Bartram Trail all ranking in the top 10 in the state along with Oviedo.

Park Vista moves on to the championship game today, facing rival Vero Beach in the anticipated 1-2 matchup

Here is the feed to see my score updates from the Final Four games. If I can find some wi-fi in the area I will post in more detail during and after the games! Should be a fun day of great lacrosse!

One team everyone expected to be here, Park Vista was knocking on the door last year, and won the Wishbone Championships in November. Coach BVA has the crew ramped up and ready to go!

Oviedo has knocked off alot of good teams this season, and arguably the toughest schedule in the state has paid off as they roll into the Final Four. Many picked against them in Districts, and then in Regionals, but these Lions keep on roaring. Can Coach Darley keep his girls playing fast and tough?

Tale of the Tape:

Oviedo Attack vs. PV Defense: Edge – Slight to Oviedo
The 14 goal outburst by Pine Crest wasn’t encouraging for CBVA, prompting him to tell his girls to stop listening to Hannah Montana and dial up some heavy metal. GK Amber Tomassi is solid in the cage, and saved the Pine Crest win with 2 big saves late, but can the rest of the defense keep the Oviedo attack at bay? Oviedo’s sparkplug is #6 Ellyn Spangenberg, one of the fastest and most dynamic playmakers in the state. #12 Paige Elmer is the top feeder for the Lions, and can put the ball anywhere it’s needed for a quick goal. This guy thinks that Oviedo’s ball control and speed put them at a slight edge.

PV Attack vs. Oviedo Defense – Big edge to PV

No denying the danger in the quick strike attack of Park Vista. Brittini Peck and Jamie Reeg form one of the best 1-2 punches in the state, and have more than 100 goals between them in 2008. PV boasts plenty of depth too, with 3 girls over 40 goals, and 7 players over 20 goals. Oviedo’s defense has struggled at times, but plays a tough style that forces opponents into game changing mistakes. PV has played at high level all year on the attack, expect that to continue at the final four. Edge Cobras

The Draw: Toss up

The stats say PV 55% of their draws, not a dominant #. Oviedo usually places Alex Lopez on the center, who has the guns to put it where she wants, which is usually where Spangenberg ends up being. Whoever wins the draw will have a big edge in the game, and can sway a contest either which way. The draw usually comes down to who wants it more…

Transition Game – Edge Park Vista

Oviedo has the wheels, and uses them liberally. If they can keep up their speed and not get caught in doubles, they can be successful. Problem is, PV does a great job in defensive transition and getting into their relentless zone ride. The Cobras also do a great job on the attack transition of taking care of the ball and passing it up the field.

Game Pick: Park Vista pulls away late, winning 17-12 and punching their ticket to the FHSAA Finals
